Roy started using RTI Ingres 2.1 in May 1984, after choosing it from among more than a dozen competing products, including Oracle. Roy started contributing short items to the info_ingres newsletter almost immediately. In about 1992 he started compiling the first Ingres FAQ, using the comp.databases.ingres Usenet group. In 1994 he was elected to the board of the North American Ingres Users Association (NAIUA) at the Chicago Ingres World Conference. He served on the board for two years and in 1996 received the NAIUA President's award for service to the Ingres community. In 1997 he moved to UK to found a consulting business specializing exclusively in Ingres. He has been involved with the UK IUA off-and-on since 1997, and was one of the invited participants in the Ingres Product Advisory Council. More recently he has been involved in shaping the Ingres Janitors project and the Ingres development sprints. Roy has presented almost 20 papers on Ingres at conferences in the UK, US and Europe. Roy is currently the chairman of the UK IUA committee.
