It's always challenging to discover what features were released in a particular Ingres version when trying to plan a migration from one release of Ingres to another.

This document attempts to complement the Ingres Migration Guide by not only providing the list of features but also including the associated project page if one exists on the Community Wiki. In some cases, the release will predate the move by Ingres Engineering to make the design documents of new features readily accessible to the community. The Ingres Migration Guide should always be the first point of reference when research is underway concerning a migration from one Ingres release to another but hopefully the information provided here will also be beneficial.

Per Keith's great comment, the Ingres Product Roadmap is availabe at Product Roadmaps. As Ingres 10 moves closer to a GA status, a similar page/layout will be provided and added to here.

Ever wonder how to find more information on the Ingres .NET Data Provider? There is quite a bit of information on the Ingres Community Wiki relating to the Ingres .NET Data Provider and using .NET with Ingres.

I have made a couple of presentations today, that is Feb. 11, 2010, which are the beginning of the community rollout of the Ingres DBMS Tools project. We received the "go-ahead" for the project from our CEO a couple of weeks ago and his first instruction was to get this out to the community for input. So, that's what we're doing.

The beginning of the project is here: Tools API Home - Ingres Community Wiki

I want to personally encourage anyone with an interest in Ingres DBMS Tools to participate in this project, by (at least) reading through the documents as they are posted and (hopefully) making comments or suggestions.

And I definitely need comments like, "You know, that's a good idea, BUT ....."

The recording of the first presentation is available for replay here: Ingres Administration Tools Webcast-20100211

Minor Ingres Community Wiki Refresh

The Ingres Community Wiki has underwent a minor refresh to hopefully help folks find content a bit easier. Check out the new Main Page.

The main changes were to cut down on the number of content boxes, update descriptions for the remaining content boxes, and add a brief list of the type of information that could be found in the particular content box.

Another small change was to bold the "Drop Downs" to highlight that they exist as I was told my a number of folks that they scrolled right passed them and then tried to figure out where to locate information on the wiki using the content boxes and proceeded to get lost.

Other minor updates were made to some of the Application Development landing pages to also help improve the ability to locate information.

This continues to be a work in progress as we work on improving the Community Wiki.

Any comments and suggestions you may have are most welcome. The comments can be around layout, organization, or what is missing.

A Community Preview of the Ingres JDBC Driver (iijdbc.jar) will be available in the future that exposes this support. An Ingres 10 DBMS and Data Access Server (DAS) are a must to exploit this feature.

Batch Execution Support.

Batch processing (batch execution actually) is currently supported in the Ingres JDBC Driver but under the covers statements are not actually batched but instead are done as Singleton queries which undermine the performance improvement expected when batching queries. The feature was implemented in this manner due to the lack of support in the Ingres DBMS for batch processing. With Ingres 10, the DBMS will be adding capabilities to handle batch processing and the JDBC Driver will be modified to take advantage of the new Batch feature. This enhancement should significantly improve batch processing in the Ingres JDBC Driver.

For more information regarding Ingres’s support of Batch Execution in Ingres 10 and the JDBC Driver, see Batch Statement Execution Performance.

A Community Preview of the Ingres JDBC Driver (iijdbc.jar) will be available in the future that exposes this support. An Ingres 10 DBMS and Data Access Server (DAS) are a must to exploit this feature.
Future blog entries will discuss new updates to the JDBC Driver and Community Previews of the new functionality.

The Ingres dialect for SQLAlchemy 0.6 is now available through SVN from http://code.ingres.com/apps/SQLAlchemy.

SQLAlchemy is an ORM framework for Python, allowing Python objects to be direclty mapped to database tables.

Ingres has a DBI driver for Python; this is available for download from http://esd.ingres.com or from the Ingres Subversion repository (http://code.ingres.com/ingres/drivers/python). This is required to use SQLAlchemy.

In order to use Ingres with SQLAlchemy, you will need to first check out the SQLAlchemy source code from http://svn.sqlalchemy.org/sqlalchemy. Then export the Ingres dialect into the same folder. Edit lib/sqlalchemy/dialects/__init__.py to include 'ingres' in the __all__ list, then install SQLAlchemy into your python package directory using python setup.py install.

Hope you followed that!!

The intention is to release this to the main SQLAlchemy project; watch this space for news!

This morning, whilst waiting for the sun to rise before heading out on two wheels, I was presented with a dilemma. A colleague had posted a message on Facebook reporting that he was upgrading his home PC to “Karmic Koala”. Remembering that Thomas was an Ubuntu advocate, I presumed he was referring to a new version of his preferred operating system.

For me, my trusty 17in widescreen Toshiba Satellite laptop brick has happily lived for a number of years under the creased crown and pinched-in-the-front world of Fedora. It is currently under the reign of “Leonidas” (11), having previously visited “Cambridge” (10) and prior to that drowned in “Moonshine” (7).

This then got me thinking. How much are we guided by the name of something when making a selection? Whether it is Lamborghini, Testarossa, Veyron or Volga as your choice of car, or True Blue, Tangerine Orange, Plum Purple, Flamingo Pink or Mould Green as the colour of your new Dell Inspiron.

I cannot quite recall why I originally selected Fedora, but have remained faithful for many years. However, with the thought of the Feisty Fawn, Intrepid Ibex, Karmic Koala and Lucid Lynx over in the Ubuntu camp, who knows I might be tempted to dip a toe in the water.

Not that I am guided just on names, otherwise I might have been tempted for SuSE, with her curvaceous name and size 10 figure (just don’t tell the wife!). But then, when I found that her real name was Software und System-Entwicklung, the appeal seemed to disappear.

What do you mean I should not just be guided on name? Of course other things matter; features, fit for purpose, future of the market, flexibility for change and funds (i.e. can I afford it), but putting these to one side just for a moment, I do wonder how much a name can guide ones choice.

Then, once I have selected my preferred Operating System, time to choose an RDBMS. There are so many to choose from. Each has pros and cons. Their names are all so enticing, I must admit to having great difficulty in selecting one. Should I choose, OpenIngres, Ingres R3, Ingres II, Advantage Ingres Enterprise Relational Database or Ingres 2006. After much debate, I have decided on Ingres. After all, there is no other choice.

I thought I'd post a link to an article about the new features in the JPA 2.0 spec, written by Kevin Sutter, who also contributes to OpenJPA. Check out the article here.

I've also been working with the Python ORM framework SQLAlchemy. This has a basic dialect for Ingres 9.2 now, which we hope to release to the community when we get time to run through the unit tests and fix any bugs.

Ingres has had a Hibernate dialect availble on esd.ingres.com for a while now, but I don't know much about that.

I feel a bit like "the ORM man" at work now, so let me know if there's any more that we need to check out!!
