Default E_GC0135_GCN_BAD_SVR_TYPE error on creating database

I have installed seemingly without error OpenRoad on Windows XP pro running under VMWare.

But I get:

C:\Ingres\OpenROAD\ingres\bin>createdb test
Creating database 'test' . . .

E_LQ0001 Failed to connect to DBMS session.
E_LC0001 GCA protocol service (GCA_REQUEST) failure.
Internal service status E_GC0135 -- A default server class has been
defined (by II_GCN_SVR_TYPE), but that server class is not known to the
Name Server..

When trying to create a database.

The error log has:

XPDEV ::[II\NMSVR\a98 , 00000000]: Mon Mar 23 20:31:57 2009 E_GC0135_GCN_BAD_SVR_TYPE A default server class has been defined (by II_GCN_SVR_TYPE), but that server class is not known to the Name Server.
XPDEV ::[II\NMSVR\a98 , 00000002]: Mon Mar 23 20:31:57 2009 E_CLFE07_BS_READ_ERR Read from peer process failed; it may have exited.

There is no firewall running.

Hi,
What is the version of Ingres you are using?
This problem may be related to the Ingres Performance Monitor.
You can try the following to remove this and see if that helps-
unlodctr oipfctrs
delete this registry key: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\oipfctrs

Do you have an Ingres installation running on this VM as well or just OpenROAD?

These errors typically occur when you have a client-only installation, with a DBMS, or where the DBMS components have not been started.

An OpenROAD install is likely to be client-only. Do you know for certain that you have installed the database server? If you go to %II_SYSTEM%\ingres\bin do you have an executable named iidbms.exe?
