OpenROAD is both a product and an open source project. OpenROAD was part of the technologies spun out of CA when Ingres Corporation was formed in 2005. OpenROAD has a long history with the Ingres customer base where it has been used for many years by both end-users and independent software vendors (ISVs) to create mission-critical business applications that are robust, scalable, and can evolve quickly to meet the ever changing needs of business.

History
OpenROAD grew out of the Ingres character-based development environment called Application by Forms (or "ABF"). ABF has been used since the early 1980s to create "green screen" Ingres applications. Both tools share a similar 4GL programming language environment and each are productive environments for quickly building Ingres applications. Many customers have elected to use TransForge (an automated process for upgrading ABF applications to OpenROAD) to bring their character applications into the graphical, Internet-oriented world.
Features
OpenROAD evolved from a simple client/server development environment in the early 1990s to a complete, multi-platform application development suite. It features a graphical interactive development environment (IDE), a middleware server capable of supporting both OpenROAD and non-OpenROAD clients and rich client runtimes supporting deployment of applications to the desktop, browser, and mobile clients.
Usage
OpenROAD is used in every sector of the economy from government to health to manufacturing. Applications range in size from several hundred lines of code with only a few windows to millions of lines of code and thousands of windows.
OpenROAD is a proven solution for building mission critical applications from both a productivity as well as performance perspective. The OpenROAD Server technology creates highly scalable application deployment solutions where database connections and business logic are easily shared among a large number of users.
