What is IRC

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. An IRC server is made up of a number of chat rooms normally referred to as channels. Each channel is prefixed with a '#' to indicated it is a channel and not a user or nickname

Why use IRC

In addition to the other methods for connecting with the Ingres community, IRC provides real-time chat. #ingres has people from different parts of the Ingres ecosystem that have varying different levels of Ingres experience all willing to help out.

Connecting to #ingres on IRC

There are two ways to connect to #ingres; either using an IRC client or for those wishing to dabble #ingres can be accessed via a web browser.

Via the web

Mibbit.com is one of a number of web based IRC clients. Useful for those who are unable to use an IRC client due to a firewall or company policies.

Connect to Mibbit.com via this SSL link : https://www.mibbit.com
Enter the following information:
- Connect to Server: FreeNode.net
- Nick (optional) : your username/nickname
- Channel(s) : #ingres
You should see something like:
Click Go and you will be connected into #ingres.

Or you can click http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=#ingres, wait for a bit (then a bit more) then choose your nick name to go direct to the channel.

Using an IRC client

In order to connect to an IRC channel, you need to install an IRC client. If you already have one installed, and your browser is correctly configured, then clicking the direct link below should automatically take you straight to the appropriate channel. If you need help finding, installing or configuring an IRC client, then here are some links that might help:
